Falcons Dive into Tournament
The Novice LL Falcons continued a busy weekend with their first tournament on Sunday, Jan.11
Game 1 - The Falcons faced off against a new opponent in the Wingham Ironmen. Hanover opened the scoring midway through the first as Dawson Happy Fahrer netted his first of the game with the assist going to Michael Spike Pierik. This opened the flood gates as the 2nd period saw Hanover playing excellent team hockey and stretching their lead to 6-0. Matthew Olly Oelschlagel received some help from Brook Fabs Leask to make it 2-0, then Dale Slappy Leroux took his turn assisting Olly for a 3 goal lead. Happy turned on the jets chipping in his 2nd and 3rd goals of the game for the hat trick, both unassisted markers. Braydon Big Mac McDiarmid capped off the successful 2nd as his linemates Christean Sidewinder VandePoll and Nathan Bigfoot Johnston set him up to end the period up by 6 goals. The team play continued in the 3rd as Alicia Alley Cat Jensen notched her first goal of the year with help from Sarah Broad. A solid effort in net earned Kyle Rollie Roulston his 2nd shutout of the year.
Game 2 - Competition increased in game 2 as Hanover squared off against the host team Minto Mad Dogs. Their 2nd consecutive shutout of the day didn't earn Hanover the win as Minto also kept the Falcons off the scoresheet. A 5 minute sudden death overtime could not solve anything between these closely matched regular season foes, setting the stage for the ever thrilling shootout. With the shootout also in a sudden "victory" format - players, fans, and coaches were all on the edge of their seats. Hanover players outdid themselves in a spectacular fashion in this game making everyone associated with the team proud of these guys and gals. The Mad Dogs managed to pull out the shootout win and a very busy weekend saw the Falcons heading home with heads held high. Way to go team!!!
