Falcons Taking Flight
A busy week was capped off with a third win in as many games as the Falcons head to the final stretch of the regular season.
The Hanover gang followed a tight checking win over Minto on Monday by welcoming Mt. Forest to The Coliseum on Thursday. Some lineup juggling by the coaches put a new wrinkle in the young Falcons development and they rose to the challenge with a 4-1 victory. Several players were thrust into different roles as missing teammates brought new line formations into play. Olly Oelschlagel was quick to put the home side up by one as he scored from Mac McDiarmid less than a minute into the game. Hanover didn't reach the scoreboard again until the second when Happy Fahrer received help from Slick Russell and Hammer Hammell putting Hanover up 2-0. Back-to-back goals in the third increased the lead to 4-0 as Bigfoot Johnson pounded his first goal of the season into the net assisted by Olly, then Olly counted his 2nd of the game with the assist to Slick. Mt. Forest spoiled Rollie's shutout bid on a bad luck deflection of a leg with 3:30 left in the third making the final 4-1.
The "Drive for Five" straight wins continued in Listowel on Saturday as the Falcons faced off against the Cyclones. It was the Cyclones who walked away dizzy after this contest as Hanover stormed the home team with steady pressure. Listowel put Hanover down early as they scored at the 6:41 mark of the first before Olly tied it up from Slappy Leroux and Alley Cat Jensen. Hanover went on to score 3 more unanswered goals collecting momentum as they went. Olly teamed up with Spike Pierik and Slick Russell to make it 2-1, then Happy Fahrer showed his stick-handling skills as linemates Fabs Leask and Alley Cat Jensen sent him in and Happy buried it for a 3-1 lead. As a prelude to the NHL All-star skills competition, Happy put his on own breakaway exhibition, as he left a befuddled Listowel goalie laying on the ice wondering how the puck was in the back of the net for the final nail in the 4-1 Hanover Falcons decision. Slick and Hammer provided assists on the last goal.
