Final Tournament of the Season
Submitted By Tawnya Schlosser on Sunday, March 28, 2010
The Hanover L.L. Falcons participated in the Mount Forest Top Hat Tournament on March 28. The kids had a great day, which was a great ending to an amazing season.
The First Game was played against the Arran-Elderslie Ice Dogs. Coach Chris decided to shake things up a little, and put Olivia Schlosser in net for the early-morning start. Hanover opened the scoring quickly and never looked back. Cam Rourke was the one to put the puck into the net at 9:30 of the first with an assist by Adam Knoll. Although the Ice Dogs pressed hard, defenseman Blake Walters held the blue line and kept the scoring chances to a minimum. Dale Leroux added a second goal for Hanover at 1:17, which was assisted by AP player Owen Doersam. The second period was all the Falcons. Goals were scored by Keifer Teeple (2), Dale Leroux, and Adam Knoll, with assists by Luke Breen, Caden Prues, Teeple and Rourke. The third period opened with a quick rush by the Ice Dogs which was handled easily by Schlosser. Then the Falcon attack continued. More goals were scored by Teeple (2), Leroux (2), Rourke and Brody Weber, with assists counted for Leroux and Teeple. However, in spite of superior defense by Nathan Oelschlagel, the Ice Dogs spoiled Schlosser's shut out with only 7 seconds remaining in the game. Final score: 13-1.
Game 2 saw the Falcons up against the Mount Brydges Cougars in a game riddled with penalties and power plays. Again Schlosser was between the pipes, giving Prues a well-deserved chance as a winger. The Falcons came out in a defensive mode while the Cougars were pressing hard. Walters and Oelschlagel stopped a number of breakaways and cleared the zone while Schlosser stopped a number of early scoring opportunities. Late in the first the Cougars drew first blood with a short-handed goal at 2:54, and then slipped through the defense again only 45 seconds later to put in another top shelf goal. The Falcons dug in during the second with Christian Vandepoll taking a number of offensive shots, but early penalties proved to be tough. The Cougars put in yet another goal on the power play at 7:45. Finally, at 4:31, Leroux got Hanover on the board with a quick, high goal. The third period saw Hanover down a man with yet another penalty, and the Cougars used it to their advantage by popping another high shot over Schlosser's head. But Hanover answered back one minute later with a goal by Rourke. Defensemen Luke Breen and Brody Weber continued to help clear the end zone, as Schlosser blocked many shots to keep the score to a 4-2 final.
The third game was a familiar rivalry between the Falcons and the Walkerton Capitals. Both teams came out on fire, determined to make this final game their own. Vetern netminder Prues was back between the pipes and ready for the challenge. Hanover forwards Doersam and Knoll pressed forward as Walters, Weber and Vandepoll worked hard to shut down the Walkerton offense. The first period ended scoreless, even though both teams had some amazing chances. Halfway through the second, Hanover opened the scoring with a goal by Leroux that was assisted by Knoll. However, Walkerton soon answered with a goal of their own with a nice backhanded shot through traffic. The third period unfortunately belonged to the Capitals. Three high shots sealed the game for them with a final score of 4-1 for Walkerton.
It's been an amazing season Hanover! Thank you to Coach Chris and the rest of the coaching staff for your caring, respectful and fun way of teaching and managing the kids this season. We appreciate all of your hard work. (:
