The Canadian Tire Atoms had a busy weekend of hockey, playing 4 games over the weekend, and winning silver in the Drayton tournament.
On Jan 9th, the day before their tournament, the Falcons faced Lucknow in what was an exciting and close game. Lucknow opened the scoring, but it was followed quickly by Hanover’s lone goal, scored by Devon Sargeant and assisted by Daven Rourke. Lucknow scored another in the 2nd, and kept the pressure on Hanover, taking 31 shots on goalie Shaymus Finlay, who kept Hanover in the game. Hanover tried hard, but was shut down by some good defence from Lucknow, and lost 2-1.
The following day the Atoms were excited for their first tournament of the season, and headed to Drayton early to face Twin Centres. The Falcons were on their game, and eager to win, as they skated to a 9-1 win. Goals scored by Kyler Knoll (4), Daven Rourke (3), Cole Mitchell and Brook Bross. Assists to Matthew Oelschlagel (4), Devon Sargeant (3), Lucas Dietz (2), Mitchell (2), Knoll, Bross, Maria Scales & Hunter Sargeant. Goalie Aaron Price made some great saves as well. For their second game, the Canadian Tire Atoms faced a very tough Elora team, in what was a very thrilling game!
Both teams had many chances throughout the first, but the game remained scoreless. Early in the 2nd, Elora scored, but Hanover was not ready to give up. Hanover’s first goal was scored at the end of the 2nd by forward Andrew Price, assisted by D.Sargeant and Rourke. Still putting on the pressure, Hanover scored again early in the 3rd, taking the lead, on a goal by Knoll, assisted by M. Oelschlagel. Hanover managed to weather the storm, and took the win 2-1. Great goaltending from Finlay.
This win put Hanover into the A side finals, and the kids played game 3 late in the day, against Thamesford. The Falcons were tired from a long day and didn’t seem to have as much fire as they had earlier in the day, but still gave it all they had. Hanover opened the scoring in the first with a goal from Rourke, assisted by Bross. Thamesford however answered back with 2 goals of their own. Hanover continued pounding shots of the Thamesford goalie, and were rewarded with their second goal, from A. Price, assisted by D.Sargeant.
Disappointment set in though, when Thamesford scored late in the 3rd to take the lead. Hanover, never willing to give up, made many great attempts, but an unfortunate deflection put them down by two goals, and they were not able to overcome it, with a final score of 4-2. Goaltending duties shared by Price & Finlay. The Canadian Tire Atoms played an amazing day of hockey, and should be very proud of their accomplishments! Way to go on winning the silver, and bringing home a trophy.
