The Hanover Canadian Tire Atoms continued their playoff run this past week against 3 very strong opponents. It started off on Feb 27th with a re-match against Walkerton #2. The Falcons were still pumped after their exciting OT win the previous weekend, and picked up right where they had left off
The two teams were very evenly matched, and it soon became clear that this would be a low scoring game. Both goalies were outstanding, making numerous saves and keeping their teams in the game. Hanover's defensive core of Matthew Oelschlagel, Nathan Oelschlagel, Maria Scales, Brook Bross and Hunter Sargeant did a great job of helping shut down Walkerton's offensive, and Hanover's forwards; Kyler Knoll, Luke Dietz, Cole Mitchell, Daven Rourke, Devon Sargeant and Andrew Price, did a great job of firing shot after shot on a hot Walkerton goalie. Early in the 2nd period Hanover was able to capitalize on a power play when defensemen Hunter Sargeant shot a lazer-beam from the point, assisted by Kyler Knoll, that put the Falcons up 1-0. This would prove to be the game winning goal, as Hanover kept the attacking Capitals at bay, and managed a shut-out for goalie Aaron Price. Final score 1-0. The following day Hanover faced Mount Forest, in what would be another tight and low scoring game. Hanover's goaltender, Shaymus Finlay, was awesome in net for the Falcons, and the entire team played well. There was only one breakdown, which resulted in the only goal of the game. Hanover lost a close one 1-0. The Falcons next travelled to Lucknow on March 2nd, to face a team they had never yet managed to beat. But this Falcons team was ready to change that! Lucknow came out strong in the first, scoring twice, which Hanover answered with one of their own from Knoll, assisted by Bross. The second period was a little stronger for Hanover, as D. Sargeant found the back of the net, assist going to Rourke. This tied the game at 2 after 2 periods. Hanover once again put on the pressure, and half way through the 3rd managed to score on a goal from Rourke, assisted by H.Sargeant and N.Oelschlagel. Lucknow attacked, pulling their goalie in the dying minutes, but Hanover stood strong winning with a score of 3-2. Great goaltending once again from Aaron Price, and an all around good effort from the team. Hanover looks forward to facing Walkerton #1 this coming weekend, and hopes to continue this winning streak!
