This past weekend, the Schaus Masonry Atom reps travelled to Seaforth, to play in a 3 game tournament, in hopes for their second tournament victory of the season.
Faced of first against a reasonable opponent, the South Huron Sabres, Hanover came out reasonably strong, and Garrett Logie scored the opening goal at just 1:55 into the first period. As the momentum of the Falcons died down, the Sabres were able to even the score at 1:28 of the first, resulting in a 1/2 point for each team at the end of the first.
The second period was scoreless, having both teams split that frame as well.
The third period saw a flat Falcons squad watch South Huron go up by two. The coaching staff emptied the net with more than four minutes left in the third, and Garrett Logie was able to convert on the man advantage, bringing the game within one. Many in / out shifts for Gregory Scales allowed the Falcons to play with the extra attacker, and to apply tons of pressure in the dying two minutes. Everyone was hopeful, but with just 8 seconds left, the Sabres broke up the Falcons attack, and found the 200 ft. shot. 4-2 Sabres.
The next game saw the Falcons meet the Goderich Sailors team. Hanover had their game face on, and the squad was ready to bring home the W. 29 seconds into the game, Logie found the mesh, assisted by Dylan Freiburger. The Falcons then hit cruise control, and failed to produce much offense, nor excitement, until the 6:54 mark in the second, when a Goderich player came onto the ice, at least 15 feet inside the Hanover blueline, where he was given the puck on a blatent off side which did not get blown down.... 1-1... As the Hanover bench was up in arms, the players focussed their dissent into hard game play, and answered that goal 30 seconds later, as Skyler Bailey converted on a juicy rebound. Freiburger picked up the assist. Then, just 17 seconds later, Austin Frook created some space and found himself on a rewarding breakaway. Assist went to Nathan Russwurm. 25 seconds later, Clayton found the back of the net, assisted by Bailey. At the end of the second, the Falcons were up 4-1, and still ready to fire.
The third period saw the Falcons open it up, as six unanswered goals finished this one at 10-2. Third period markers were by Clayton (2), Logie (2), Freiburger and Bailey. Assists went to Travis Campbell, Bailey (2), Freiburger (3), and Ridge Patterson. A solid effort by goaltender Kyle Roulston.
Sunday's matchup brought the division leading Lambton Shores Predators and second place Hanover to the ice. Lambton Shores was boasting an impeccable 26-0-0 record, and was the type of team that deserved their status. Armed and ready for battle, though, the Falcons poured on the pressure and put the Predators on their heels for a few shifts of the first, but shortly fell down by 2. A return goal by Logie from Freiburger and
Tyler Campbell saw the Falcons only marker, yet the players kept their heads held high, and delivered an effort filled match.
Minus the obvious mistakes that Hanover repeated, the level of play was high, and the game was something to be proud of. A solid effort, we just met a great team. Good job, boys.
