On Wednesday evening, the Schaus Masonry Atom reps made the 1.5hr trek to Lion's Head, to faceoff against a strong Bruce Penninsula squad.
Bruce Penninsula has been on quite a roll, with their most notable accomplishment being second place in the Wingham Regional Silver Stick Tournament, one tournament that Hanover was unable to attend.
The opening shift of the game saw two evenly matched teams take to the ice, and exchange opportunities. The second shift of the game, however, at just 8:49 into the first, saw the Falcons trailing by one. At 7:34, just two shifts later, the Falcons were down by 2....
An immediate change in the lineup, a shuffle here and a shuffle there, resulted in Hanover narrowing the gap by one, on a low risk shot from Garrett Logie.
Headed into the second frame, the team took note of the BP goaltending change, and took the opportunity to bury one on the new netminder at just 7:35. With the game now tied at 2, the energy of the squad increased, but the persistent Bruce Peninsula squad held us to just 2 for the remainder of the frame.
Period three was energetic, and it was still anyone's game. The falcons went down by 1, at 10:13, but were revitalized when Brenden Clayton took to a quality rush and fired his bullet of a wrist shot from the top of the circles, finding the top corner of the net. With the game now tied, the Falcons put their heads down, and charged for the finish. Just 15 seconds after the Clayton goal, Dylan Freiburger found the twine, assisted by Logie. Four minutes later, Freiburger did it again, this time with helpers from Tyler Campbell and Ridge Patterson.
The Falcons felt somewhat comfortable with their newfound 2 goal lead, but managed to drop to a one goal lead with just 3:02 left in the final frame. Hanover recognized the urgency and importance to protect the lead, and adjusted their game play accordingly. With 6 BP attackers, and an empty net, the home team failed to produce in the final minutes, as they watched the visiting Hanover Falcons take another 2 points away from them.
The Falcons have three games remaining in the regular season, and are aiming for 3 solid matches to pave their way to a quality playoff position.
