The Canadian Tire/Booms Canadiens Hanover Falcons Pee Wee Rep Team travelled to Goderich March 11-13 to participate in the 67th annual Lions Club Young Canada Week tournament.
The boys played well in Game #1 against the West Grey Warriors and came away with a 7-2 victory. The offence was led by Nick Freiburger who would score a hat trick while assisting on 3 other goals. A strong forecheck and a determined back check by the forwards would create many scoring opportunities, while limiting the Warriors’ chances.
Game #2 was a match-up with the Shelburne Wolves. A well played defensive game by the Hanover team would prove to be too much for the Wolves and the boys came away with a 3-0 victory.
The final game of the preliminary round would be a game against the Kawartha Coyotes. The Falcons were playing some great hockey by this point and continued to improve as the tournament progressed. It was an evenly matched game until the third period when the Falcons dominated and scored three times to make the final score 6-2.
With a 3-0 record, Hanover would move into a Semi-Final game against a very good team from Lucan. This would prove to be the most exciting game of the weekend. A hard fought battle between both teams. Hanover would score a buzzer beater with only 0.1 seconds left on the clock at the end of the second period to take a 2-1 lead. The two teams would exchange goals in the third period and then Lucan would tie the game at 3-3 with only 3 minutes to play in regulation. The Falcons would hold on to force the game to overtime after a last minute surge by their opponents. In overtime, goaltender Spencer Teeple would face a breakaway and make a good save to keep the team in the game. Moments later, Freiburger would score the game winner that would put the Falcons into the Championship Game.
The final game of the tournament would have Hanover playing against the South Bruce Blades to determine who would claim the tournament title. In two previous meetings between these 2 teams, each team had picked up a win with a narrow 1 goal victory.
The Falcons came out determined to win the game which would make them tournament champions. Kyle Ermel led the attack with 4 goals and the defence would turn any scoring chances away by the Blades making the final a 5-0 shutout victory.
A great weekend of hockey played by the entire team. A super team effort by a super group of kids. Way to go Boys!
