Hanover Falcons Atom LL1 Capture WOAA Silver Flight Championship
Submitted By Jacob Park on Sunday, March 23, 2014
The Hanover Falcons Atom LL1 squad rolled into Wingham on Saturday morning to take on the Ironmen in Game 2 of their best of 3 series for the Silver Flight .  Despite an early Hanover lead in Game 1, the Ironmen battled back to tie it in regulation and force overtime.  A two on none breakaway by Hanover’s forwards was all it took.  Inches from the net, Jacob Park faked the shot and passed the puck to a waiting Cam Cook who tapped it in to take a 4-3 OT victory.

The Falcons were looking for a sweep to capture the championship on foreign soil, but it wouldn’t be easy against the gritty Ironmen.  The first period saw lots of back and forth action, with neither team gaining the advantage.  Stellar goaltending by Falcons netminder Joseph Embro and defensive excellence by Spencer Galbraith and Garrett Walters kept Wingham scoreless through the first.  Forwards Jacob Bryant, Johnny Magee and Dominic McGrail had some strong scoring opportunities, but were unable to beat a tough Wingham goalie.

The battle continued in the second, and it was as hard fought as the first.  Just minutes into the period, blueliner Ryan Pierik fed the puck to winger Jacob Park who sent a long pass sailing to the stick of center Cam Cook.  Cook side stepped a lone Wingham defender and buried the puck top shelf with a quick wrist shot to take a 1-0 lead.  Minutes later, Cook would take it to the Wingham goaltender again, this time he was denied, but the rebound found the waiting stick of Jacob Park who tapped it past the goal line to put the Falcons up by 2.  The offensive onslaught continued just a few minutes later when Cook would take the puck end to end and stun the Ironmen keeper yet again to take a 3-0 lead.  The Hanover defensive pairing of Spencer Galbraith and brothers Owen and Bryson Breen kept the Ironmen’s offensive opportunities at a minimum.  In the dying minute of the second, the Ironmen would get on the board to make it 3-1.

The early minutes of the third period saw Cam Cook on a breakaway, only to be hauled down by a desperate Wingham defenseman.  A penalty shot ensued, but the feisty Hanover center was denied by the Wingham goalie.  At the 9:17 mark, a pass from defensemen Spencer Galbraith would find Cook, Cook then fed the puck to a waiting Jacob Park who sped past the Wingham D, and sent a wrist shot sailing into the back of the twine.  Falcons take a 4-1 lead.  The Hanover offense didn’t let up; forwards Foster Black, Wyatt Kraft and Elliott Turnbull also played fierce to extend Hanover’s lead, but were turned back by the Wingham netminder.  The Ironmen had no intention of lying down and let Hanover walk all over them on their home turf.  A power play goal by the Ironmen cut Hanover's lead to two with just over a minute to go.  With nothing left to lose, and the game on the line, Wingham pulled their netminder and their offense swarmed the Hanover zone.  A scramble in front of the net ensued and Wingham potted their third goal with just 6 seconds remaining to bring them within one.   Time ran out for the Ironmen, as the final drop of the puck occurred and time expired.  Hanover sweeps the series against a tough Wingham team to capture the WOAA Atom Silver Flight Championship.  Congratulations to a great group of kids for a job well done and, on behalf of all the parents, thank you to our Coaching staff for a fun filled and exciting year.
