Amalgamation Discussions
Submitted By Jenn Baetz on Fri 05 13, 22
Hanover Minor Hockey is entering into discussions with West Grey Minor Hockey regarding the possibility of amalgamating our two organizations.  Discussions are in the preliminary stages and once we have more information to share we will hold an information session (on June 6, time and location TBD) where families can address any questions or concerns they may have.  In the mean time, please have a look at the information below that may answer some questions you may have.

We understand that families have questions that they would like to ask regarding this process and what an amalgamation might look like, that go beyond the information listed below.  Questions will not be answered at this time as we honestly don't have enough information to give accurate answers.  If you have questions that you would like us to answer, you can send them to [email protected]  These questions will be collected and answered at the June 6 Information Session.  After the Information Session we will post an updated list of questions and answers for families to see on our website.

The Amalgamation Committee is comprised of members of both West Grey and Hanover Minor Hockey executive members.

Several meetings have occurred to discuss amalgamation and what it looks like for each of our organizations. We are at the point where we need to move forward with sharing our proposal with our organization members and conducting a vote.  It is in the best interest of the Amalgamation Committee to have this information ahead of time due to the heavy time investment and potential legal costs associated with the proposed amalgamation.

Our mission is to create the best minor hockey experience for all of the players in our southern portion of Grey County. We are committed to doing all that we can for the betterment of the game, our players, and our communities.

As such, through this joint effort to amalgamate, we envision both a larger and more connected hockey community that will be focused on appropriate opportunities for all players. We aim to focus on team building, sharing the passion for the game, and creating a sense of belonging for everyone.

We will strive to provide quality leadership at all levels and will develop an organizational understanding of teamwork and sportsmanship in an atmosphere of fun and positive reinforcement for all players and volunteers.

Why Amalgamate?

Amalgamation means:

All players playing at a level that is appropriate for their capability.

Rep and LL teams at all age divisions with appropriately placed players.

Greater opportunities for improvement and expanding capabilities of players at the local level.

Increased ability for organization to host specialized development clinics (eg. goalie clinics, power skating, skills and drills)

Larger pool of parent volunteers for tournament hosting, coaching clinics, & certification clinics.

Most importantly - children enjoying playing hockey with peers, and children that they eventually will play on secondary school sport teams with, and learning and developing at an appropriate level.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will the new association be called?

If the vote is yes, a subcommittee will be created to handle the submission of ideas for names and logos. Both centres are very open to having the membership make recommendations which can be considered.

Is the amalgamation happening automatically?

No. The decision to amalgamate or not to amalgamate is the responsibility of each voting member of both West Grey and Hanover Minor Hockey.

How does amalgamation happen?

Both West Grey and Hanover Minor Hockey Association would need a majority vote of 66% or greater from their respective members to proceed with the amalgamation.

If the vote is yes to amalgamate, when does it start?

We would aim to be officially amalgamated for the start of the 2023-2024 season.

If the vote is no then what happens?

If either organization has less than the required yes votes (66% of the vote) the opportunity to restart or continue amalgamation talks is lost for a minimum of 2 years (per OMHA regulations).

Who can vote?

One vote is allowed per registered family unit that has a player whose home centre is West Grey or Hanover.

In the case of a split family only the parent at the registered address of the player can vote.

Where will my player have practice?

Throughout a season teams will have to rotate which arena they practice and have games at. Depending on the number of teams in an age division, each team would take turns playing in Hanover, Durham and Ayton for a period of time during the season.

What will the centre point be for the new organization?

Q. What if I am in a right of choice area according to the new centre point?

A. Right of choice will open up for any member within the designated area to re-sign or leave the new organization. Once a right of choice player signs onto the organization they are considered a life time member.

Q. How will the local and younger age group teams be made?

A. To be discussed to determine the best path going forward by the appropriate convenors

Q. How will this change the teams that we play?

A. At the older age divisions, U11 through to U18, the amalgamated centre will most likely be designated a “B” centre as determined by the OMHA.  With the recent playoff format changes a teams playoff grouping would be determined by competitiveness during the season.

Q. Why amalgamate with our neighbouring centres?

A. As each centres demographics continue to change we’re looking for ways to offer the best solutions that will allow hockey to continue to thrive in our communities.  Amalgamation would help each association offer a hockey program that maximizes player development and fun in part by fielding teams comprised of players with consistent ability at every level.

Q. Will the new centre have its own Board of Directors?

A. Yes, the amalgamated centre will have a Board comprised of an equal number of Directors from each centre.

Q. How will coaches be selected?

A.  Initially coaches will be selected by a committee comprised of people from each centre, until such time the boards are completely integrated together.

Q. How will rep teams be selected?

A. The teams will be selected by the Coach plus unbiased, independent evaluators.

Q. Will there be a fixed number of Players from each Association on each Rep team?

A.  No, it is not realistic to set fixed player numbers from each Association. Player selection will be based on player ability/skill. This ensures consistency in talent/skill amongst selected player groups and provides for strong/competitive team structures that are fun and exciting to play within.

Q. When will we find out if the Amalgamation is approved?

A. The proposed Amalgamation will eventually be presented to the OMHA when all the requirements are completed to provide the best quality application

Q.  Why do you we need to vote this far in advance of fall 2023?

A.  Due to all the requirements and expectations of the OMHA along with potential legal advice required by both associations to put forth a quality application, the amalgamation committee is seeking early approval from each membership to gauge the interest in going forward.
